This thesis addresses the question: how can recent advancements in digital technology and digital scholarship best be applied to the production, publication, and use of digital scholarly editions of music? The research presented here itself contributes to such advancements by proposing original theoretical and practical work surrounding a case study edition on two musical numbers from Carl Maria von Weber's opera Der Freischiitz, first performed in 1821. The chief aim and outcome of the thesis is arguing in favour of a wider engagement of both scholars and performers with the digital medium for music editions. The digital editing of music is a nascent field; currently there is neither an established practice for digital editing, nor an established form of digital publication of music scores. As a result, the literature in this field is both speculative and normative in its attempt to establish a practice, or at least suggest a way forward. This thesis aims to engage with and contribute to this ongoing dialogue, but through a case study of Der Freischiitz aims to show and critically discuss practical aspects of editing for the digital medium. The chapters in the thesis are structured in three parts: 1) a review of theories and techniques in the long-established field of digital editing of literature, with the aim of understanding what can be carried over to a musical context; 2) a case study on Der Freischiitz, including a critical report of editorial work and a detailed description of the digital embodiment for both the score and the libretto of the opera; 3) a concluding overview of digital publication for use in music performance.
